JAD President's Welcome
Welcome to our 2022 Fall Convention! Another live event post-pandemic, and joint with Cardinal and JAD. And this one will be even more exciting as the team has put together so many fun and interesting activities: multiple contests, classes, lots of singing, a visit and Fireside chat with BHS President John Donehower, an EIH mike testing chorus with a brand new arrangement courtesy of EIH Chorus director Jay Dougherty, and recognition of JAD’s two recent International Champs (Hearsay and Quorum). Add in a fabulous show Saturday night with both Districts’ Championship Quartet groups – JADAQC and CARDAQC – and it doesn’t get much better.
I invite you to come to the Presidents’ Hospitality Suite Friday night at the Radisson after the Quartet semifinals – open to all. Come sing a tag, catch up with friends, grab a snack, chat with your officers, or just get in the mood for the rest of the Convention.
Saturday night will be a limited set of Hospitality rooms (hotels don’t have a lot of space this weekend due to other groups), but we expect them to be rocking. Your favorite hosts will be present - and likely in the same room!
Above all, have fun – and sing a bunch. We are glad you are here,

CAR President's Welcome
Hello everyone!
Welcome to the singers and friends of the Cardinal and Johnny Appleseed Districts to our Fall Convention! It’s great to be back in Dayton for an amazing weekend filled with barbershop and fellowship.
As the event gets underway, please make sure to thank the events teams from both CAR and JAD for all of their hard work and dedication in bringing this event to fruition. They have been working very hard to ensure that we hold a safe, high-quality convention.
Throughout the weekend, be sure to catch up with all of your old friends, and definitely make time to make lots of new ones. The joint convention in the Spring really helped to show us that barbershoppers are the same everywhere - We’re all simply friends that haven’t met yet. And of course, do some amazing singing! Check out the schedule of events and go enjoy some of the fantastic offerings. Be sure to make the most of every moment we can.
Just as I said this past Spring, hopefully, I'll get a chance to speak with each and every one of you, to thank you for joining us this weekend - You are appreciated! Once again, a very warm welcome to you, and if you have any questions, suggestions, or just want to say “Hi!” - do not hesitate to find me!
Yours in Harmony,

Welcome from your JAD
Director of Events & Conventions
Fall Convention 2022 is here, and we are excited to welcome everyone back to Dayton, Ohio. We are thrilled to have 23 quartets and 10 choruses (at the time of this note)! We have many opportunities outside of the contest that I hope you will take part in. Please take time to sing a tag and grab a photo with a friend you have not seen in a while! We will be sharing a link to a Google drive where you can post those pictures with the entire district to share!
As always if we can help you in any way over the weekend, please let us know!

Welcome from your CAR
Events & Conventions Vice President
Welcome back to our 2022 Johnny Appleseed/Cardinal District Fall Convention. The reason I said "Welcome back" is that I hope many of you are returning from our fantastic Spring Prelim Convention.
It was amazing! As many of you know my name is Jim DeBusman, the Cardinal District’s Events Vice President. I also want to thank Skipp Kropp, my incredible Associate Events Vice President, and all the Cardinal District Events Team. They are doing a wonderful job of assisting Nathan Miller, your JAD's Director of Events & Conventions, and his outstanding Events Team.
This is our second combined convention weekend celebration filled with multiple activities, singing, and quartet/chorus competitions. There will be many activities going on throughout the weekend. Yes, it will be a convention... not just a competition. Many of those activities, you may wish to choose during a singing session, are listed in the program. The whole idea is to enjoy whatever you are attracted to at this wonderful convention.
On behalf of the Barbershop Harmony Society, the Cardinal and Johnny Appleseed Districts, thank you for your interest and participation. We know you will really enjoy being a part of this wonderful weekend celebration of music and togetherness.

BHS Judging Panel
Music
The Music judge is responsible for adjudicating the musical elements of the performance. He judges the degree to which the musical delivery demonstrates an artistic sensitivity to the song’s ongoing predominant musical element(s) and mood or story, as well as the extent to which the musical performance displays the hallmarks of the barbershop style. One of the primary hallmarks of barbershop music is its consonant harmony. Thus, the quality of performance depends largely on the ensemble presence, accurate execution, and artistic delivery of the consonant harmonies traditionally identified with the barbershop style. Indirectly, the Music judge evaluates the work of the composer and arranger. A basic prerequisite for a successful barbershop performance is that the song be appropriate to the barbershop style.
Performance
One significant goal of any art form is communication. A barbershop performance refers to how the artist communicates his/her message and vision via the transformation of a song into an entertaining experience for an audience. The performance of a song is the artist’s gift to the audience; whose experiences, memories, and imagination transform that gift into an emotional experience. The performers’ goal is to create a high level of entertainment through the performance. The means to that end are as varied as the personality, abilities, and creative skills of the performers.
Singing
Judges in this category evaluate the degree to which the performer achieves artistic singing in the barbershop style: the production of vibrant, rich, resonant, technically accurate, and highly skilled sound, created both by the individual singer’s use of good vocal techniques and by the ensemble processes of tuning, balancing, unity of sound and precision. They listen for a sense of precise intonation, a feeling of fullness or expansion of sound, a perception of a high degree of vocal skill, a high level of unity and consistency throughout the performance, and a freedom from apparent effort that allows the full communication of the lyric and song.
